HOMEWORK #2 : METROPOLITAN MUSEM OF ART
DILLON RAMNATH

1. VIRGIN & CHILD (1442-1497)

Its a sculpture of The Virgin Mary and baby Jesus. It was sculpted around the time of the Renaissance. I feel like it is bearing witness to the birth of Jesus. I feel like the artist is trying to remember the story of the birth of Jesus, because it is so important to many people around the world. I feel like it is important because its a biblical piece, and it shows the belief of the son of god.

Its showing Mary holding Jesus her son, which was given to her by god according to the story. She is depicted looking at the baby Jesus. To me it is also showing a mothers love for her child. In the piece she is shown smiling. Jesus is depicted with a ray of sun or light behind his head. Which in many pieces of ancient Indian art it is "god like".

It is made from marble and was sculpted by Benedetto Da Mariano. I believe it was made by the artist chizz ling away at the marbles to mold it in to the image he has in head.

I felt that he used marble because marble is a material that won't deteriorate quickly and over time. I think he wants his art work and story to be remembered.

The story and art work is a common work of art through out time and around the world. That's why I feel that this piece is so important.

2. HERCULES  & ACHELOUS  1590, NETHERLANDS, HARALEM

This piece of art is a depiction of Achelous and Hercules. Achelous is depicted as a Bull. According to the story he turned himself in to a bull to battle the strong Hercules to win the princess. Both are Greek gods. I feel like the artist is bearing witness to the story of the battle between these two powerful Greek gods that had a great impact in history.

It shows Achelous as a bull charging to Hercules. And the powerful Hercules is holding him by the horns. The setting is in the forest and in the background is the princess looking on to this great battle.

This was created with oil on canvas mixed with colored paint. I believe he focused ands started with the two gods first and then the back round. I felt like he put more detail in to the two characters. The two characters are huge and take up most of the canvas because the painting is mostly focused on these two beast.

There is a lot of details in the muscle of both characters.

The colors and how much detail in the picture. It is beautiful.

3. BENJAMAN FRANKLIN,  1706-1790

It is a portrait of Benjamin Franklin, it was when ben went to France

He was celebrity in France due to his importance at the time

It is a very clearpicture and really captures Benjamin Franklin at that time like it was preserved.

There is a lot of detail in his face and close and focuses on Ben with a dark back round

It is oil on canvas.

ACHELOUS & HERCULES

A. I feel that in this painting the artist if using balance in this piece. Mostly the whole canvas is taken up by these two characters and even though Achelous is a bull on one side Hercules is big almost the same size I feel to show how powerful he is and I feel like there is a balance between these two characters and they are in proportion to each other. And I feel like this piece has a sense of suspense to it like your wondering who is going to win this battle and it has you at the edge of your seat, and I feel as if it has this picture creates that because these two gods are powerful and you don't know who is going to win.

B. I feel that the beauty in this picture is both the gods because they take up so much of the painting. And the physiques and muscle. And how they are in battle with each other. I feel that its a classical picture due to the time period it came from the Greek era.

C. I feel I would re make it with them going head on with each other. So it can really show the glance in power and how equally matched these gods are .
